London grew organically from two original Roman settlements, Londinium (the City of London, now the Square Mile) on the northern bank of the Thames, and Southwark on the south. The Thames, tidal within the city and cutting a wide dramatic curve through its heart, remains the central axis of the map. The City of London, at just one square mile, retains its ancient Roman boundary, clearly visible as a dense cluster of tall buildings that ends abruptly at its historic edge.
What makes London's map interesting
A custom map poster of London, United Kingdom turns a meaningful location into personalized wall art — completely free with MapPoster.
London is one of the world's most culturally diverse cities, a sprawl of former villages that grew into one vast metropolis, broken up by great royal parks like Hyde Park and Regent's Park. The Tower of London, continuously occupied for over 900 years, and Buckingham Palace together anchor the city's historic core. For a map poster, the Thames, winding from London Bridge westward past the Palace of Westminster, provides the visual anchor. Deep navy, classic charcoal, or foggy grey tones perfectly capture London's layered, endlessly fascinating character.
