Utrecht boasts a medieval cartography that is simultaneously incredibly dense and profoundly charming. The city's geography is entirely defined by the Oudegracht (Old Canal), a spectacularly unique waterway that curves violently through the inner city, famously featuring street-level wharves that sit deeply sunken below the actual street level, a feature totally unique in the world.

A custom map poster of Utrecht, Netherlands turns a meaningful location into personalized wall art — completely free with MapPoster.
The absolute gravitational center of the map is the massive, soaring, solitary Dom Tower, standing completely disconnected from its church due to a horrific historic tornado. Framing the deeply curved, moat-ringed medieval center provides an intricate, beautiful, and highly ordered piece of cartographic art. Warm, historic Dutch brick reds, calm canal-glass teals, or rich, scholarly library-browns brilliantly reflect the brilliant academic soul of this historic city.
